The Miracle Life of Edgar Mint - Brady Udall
Even though this book is pretty long and doesn’t exactly fit into the “light, fun, easy-to-read” category, I read it in two sittings because I just couldn't put it down. It is a novel about a little Native American boy who, after a freak accident where everyone at the scene believes he is dead, he is actually saved by a doctor at the hospital, lives there for many months where he creates his own family and routine, is sent to a BIA (Bureau of Indian Affairs) school (notoriously abusive and horrible), eventually allows himself to be adopted by a Mormon family and converts to Mormonism, and in general keeps surviving these amazing and sometimes awful situations, all the time wanting to find the person who accidentally caused this horrible accident to tell him he really is alive. It may sound depressing but it really is uplifting, and magically crafted with how it comes together in the end. (Postscript: It has been several weeks since I finished this book and I am still thinking about it.)
